Lost in the Hype

1 Peter 1:3-25

We live in a world where everything is hyped. Every day, we're pulled into the gravitational force of the latest trend, the most viral TikTok, the newest drop—whatever captures the moment. It's like walking into a perpetual pep rally. And for a while, the hype feels great. It's exhilarating, energetic, empowering. But in that whirlwind of excitement, we realize that we need more than hype. What we need is hope. This week, we will talk about how Jesus gives us hope over hype.

1. What stood out to you in this week's message?

2. If you met someone learning English as a second language, they came across the word "hope" and asked you what it meant. How would you describe the word hope? How would you describe the word hype?

3. Read 1 Peter 1:3-4. What do these verses say about hope? What is the foundation of hope?

4. Pastor James said, “Hype is the world's counterfeit to God's hope.” In what ways is hype a counterfeit to God’s hope?

5. Hype entertains us with this belief that it can handle the weight of our expectations. On the other hand, hope is able to sustain the weight of your future, of your life, of your identity. “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him." (Psalm 62:5) Why is hope found in God able to handle the weight of our expectations?

6. Read Romans 15:13. What does this verse say about hope?

7. Read 1 Peter 1:13. What does Peter tell us to set our hope on? What does this mean to you?

8. Pastor James said, “Where hype is set on circumstances, hope is set on Jesus Christ.“ Based on the scriptures we have looked at, what is the difference between hype and hope? As a group, how can we help each other avoid falling for the hype that comes our way every day?

9. What hype are you pursuing that doesn’t have the strength to hold you up?
